SCOUT TROOP 43

An active, boy-run troop with camping trips monthly and week-long summer camp.

Troop 43 meets in Paxton Hall on most Monday nights throughout the year. It is an active, boy-run troop with camping trips monthly and week-long summer camp. Most summers, older scouts go on a High Adventure outing to places like Philmont in the Southern Rockies, the Florida Sea Base, or the boundary waters of Minnesota.

Troop 43 was formed on September 1, 1972, when it was chartered by our church. Every troop is required to have a chartering organization which provides meeting space for the troop and names a Charter Organization Representative. The Charter Organization Representative (Matt Wicks) is part of the Troop Committee (adult leadership) and works closely with the Committee Chair (Kimo Hemmes) and Scoutmaster (Frank Downey). The Charter Organization Representative also is the official voting member of the Three Fires Council on any Council policy decisions.

The following brief history is based on research done by former Troop Historian, Patrick MacDonald. While Troop 43 was formed in 1972, the church has had a much longer history with Boy Scouts. The church sponsored Troop 3 in 1913 when Rev. T. H. Higginbotham was pastor. Over the next 25 years, the troop changed back and forth between Troop 2 and Troop 3 but mainly was known as Troop 3. The Gustafson family was involved in the troop during this time with both John and Arnold Gustafson having served as Scoutmaster. The historical record for Troop 3 is empty from 1940-1972. It is not known when this troop either ceased to exist or became inactive, but it is likely the church continued to charter the troop as long as it was active.
